about

When I started learning capoeira, there was no special classes where you specifically learned the musicality of this art. Things were different in the 80’s. Since then, many things have changed, and actually I do believe that many of it have improved.

I remember vividly asking my master like this?

- But how did you made this rhythm variation and so?

And he answered me:

- I don't remember

It was so, there was no didactics or even care for a pedagogy between the master and the apprentices.

"Its principle has not been measured and its end is inconceivable to the wisest capoeirista," Mestre Pastinha once said.

A few years later I was lucky enough to get a copy of a cassette tape (which I keep until today) with capoeira rhythms recorded on Radio MEC by Mestre Moraes when he was still living in Rio de Janeiro.

That’s how it happened. From this material I learned my lessons and took my notes, from a cassette tape! But soon I would already be attending the "Rodas de Capoeira" in Rio de Janeiro, and the organic musicality of the capoeira began to infect me and the learning happened and happens until today when I go to play capoeira, play music and enjoy the ritual of a roda.

This album of rhythms was inspired by that old cassette tape.

Since 1996 I have been going back and forth from Brazil to the United Kingdom, and recently to Mexico, where I currently live. I worked in slums in Rio, theatre in London and productions in Asia and Scotland. ... more
