about

I wrote the lyrics of song 'O O Malungo pisa level no Valongo', after a trip to Rio, in honor of the more than a million African (slavevoyages.org) people who passed through the Valongo Warf.

Malungo is an African word frequently used by Afro-Brazilian communities and cultures including that of Capoeira Angola. The most common meaning a brother or companion. Afro-Brazilian dictionaries state that the word comes from the word ship in Kikongo – thus origin would be that of ship mate.

The words of the song refer to the abuse of the power of the city hall, property developers and society in general of the heritage and black history of Brazil, as takes place is in the case of the Valongo Warf and the need to tread with care and attention in the African territories of Brazil of the past, today and in the future. At the same time it tries to be a tribute to the strategies of survival, triumph over the domination and creativity of black people in Brazil.
